Summer is finally here!
Vacations are planned. Calendars are filling with family gatherings, beach days, barbecues, and well-deserved time away from work.
While taking time to recharge is important, there’s one thing you don’t want to put on hold completely: your communication growth.
Communication Skills Are Like Muscles
Whether you’re working on public speaking, executive presence, accent modification, leadership communication, or simply becoming more confident in meetings, progress comes from consistent practice.
Just like a muscle weakens when it’s not used, communication skills can become rusty when practice stops altogether.
The good news? You don’t need hours of training to maintain momentum.
Small Efforts Make a Big Difference
During vacation season, focus on consistency rather than perfection.
Even five minutes a day can help you maintain the gains you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
Try:
- Reading aloud for a few minutes
- Practicing a vocal warm-up
- Recording yourself speaking
- Reviewing one communication goal
- Being mindful of your pace, volume, or pronunciation during conversations
Small efforts add up.
Summer Creates Unexpected Practice Opportunities
Vacations often place us in new situations where communication matters.
You may be:
- Meeting new people
- Networking socially
- Sharing stories with family and friends
- Giving directions
- Participating in group activities
These moments provide excellent opportunities to practice clear, confident communication in a natural setting.
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
Many people believe they must practice exactly as they do during training sessions. That’s simply not true.
The goal during the summer is to maintain awareness and keep moving forward. Even a small amount of intentional practice is better than none at all.
One Final Thought
The professionals who achieve the greatest communication success aren’t necessarily the ones who practice the hardest—they’re the ones who practice consistently.
So enjoy your vacation. Relax. Recharge. Make wonderful memories.
Just don’t let your communication goals take the entire summer off.
And remember, sometimes the biggest benefit of ongoing coaching isn’t learning something new—it’s having the accountability, feedback, and support needed to continue applying what you’ve already learned. Consistent guidance helps keep momentum moving forward, even during the busiest seasons of the year.
Your future self will thank you for the small efforts you make today.
