What is an Accent?
Every language has a distinct way of pronunciation, a unique rhythm, a specific melody. There are also particular ways that each language has their native speakers move their mouth including the tongue, lips, and jaw. When learning English as a second language, understanding these differences allows you to easily learn the proper enunciation of American English.
Why Do People Adjust Their Accent?
Even though we may have a perfect grasp of the grammar of English, our accent can be unfamiliar to those we interact with on a daily basis. If your accent is preventing you from communicating clearly it can have a huge impact on business advancement. Not to mention having to repeat oneself over and over can be frustrating. Those who wish to adjust their accent, practice to use an accent familiar to those around them in order to be more easily understood.
What is Dialect?
A dialect is the distinct voice patterns, inflection, pronunciation, and even word choices made in a particular area. There is nothing wrong or bad about dialects, they are just another part of our diversity and what makes us so unique.
Why Do People Adjust Their Dialect?
Even though we may both speak the same language our dialect can vary greatly. Those who wish to adjust their dialect, practice to use a dialect familiar to those around them in order to be more easily understood.
What is accent reduction?
Accent reduction’s goal is not to eliminate an accent entirely but rather to be easily understood by using the accent that is familiar to the listener. Through accent reduction training you learn the proper sounds and intonation patterns of American English in order to eliminate barriers and promote easy and fluid communication.
